Airplane reads. Beach reads. Books for making time pass in the car.
I think it's sort of personal. If you're a horror fan, Stephen King, hands down. His books are big, creepy, scary, intense, totally involving. I get lost in his characters and then the story. Rereading any of them brings even more awakening. There's just so much in them.
Nelson DeMille is my favorite, though. His John Corey is irreverent, smart mouthed, funny and deadly smart. DeMille's books tackle social and contemporary issues with a vengeance. They are serious while the hero is cracking wise.
Daniel Silva's serious featuring Gabriel Allon, Israeli spy, will scare the hell out of you, too, but for a different reason. The scenarios are all too possible. The things Silva writes about could actually be happening. He points out what a dangerous place our world really is.
So, for those days on the beach, hoping for some light reading, try W. Bruce Cameron. Pretty much anything by him. REPO MADNESS is a good one. MIDNIGHT PLAN OF THE REPO MAN. And, of course, A DOG'S PURPOSE.
